A treat for fans

Award-winning singer-composer Rynn Lim Yee Chung will show off nifty dance moves at his upcoming concert.

Eight years ago, Rynn Lim Yee Chung (pic) never imagined that he could be win music awards, much less stage his own concert.

Only two years after his debut as a recording artiste, the Sarawakian has become the hottest Malaysian newcomer in the Chinese entertainment scene.

Now, the Taiwan-based Malaysian singer-actor is understandably excited about holding his first concert on home ground early December.

“I feel very lucky. To be able to hold my own concert in my homeland means a great deal to me,” says Lim. “Not many local artistes have been able to do that. The competition with foreign artistes can be quite daunting for most.”

Before becoming a singer, the microbiology graduate from Universiti Malaya was signed on as a composer with Touch Music Publishing, an arm of Halo Music. For six years, he wrote songs for many popular singers. Finally, his turn came. For Lim, last year marked the beginning of all good things.

Between the release of his first album, 1st, in 2005 and his second, In the Rain (Ling Yu Zhong), this year, he won a slew of best new artiste awards in Taiwan, China and Malaysia.

In March, he became Sony’s spokesperson for its latest range of digital cameras, Cyber-shot T-100. Last month, he was named ambassador for the Korean online game, Granado Espada, together with Kym Jin Sha, his Shanghai-born label-mate.

Apart from making music, Lim has also proved he can act he when he starred in his very first TV drama series, The Beginning, last year. He played the lead and composed the theme songs for the series.

Lim is currently filming his second drama series, scheduled to be aired in mid-December.

The 13-episode series, Sorire Pour Moi (Smile for Me), the first Chinese idol drama produced by Astro, is said to have countless kissing scenes featuring Lim and the female lead, played by Josephine Goh Lee Chen.

For his up-coming concert, Lim would like to share the stage with Sheila Majid. “I’d like to work with someone I feel comfortable with on stage. Personally, I’d like to invite Sheila Majid to be my guest artiste.”

The pop idol had a duet with his very own idol, Sheila, on his self-penned Xuan Lu (Melody). The jazz queen sang in Malay, and he, Mandarin. The Malay lyrics of Melody were written by Sheila.

Can fans expect any surprises from Lim during his concert?

“Well, I’m neither the king of song nor dance. But, I’m ready to show my fans something new. I shall be dancing.”

The 28-year-old artiste has never been known for dancing. “I’m not sure what the dance moves would be like. We’ll see what the dance teacher and choreographer have in store for me.”

After meeting the Press recently, Lim expressed this wish: “I hope that one day I will be able to stage a concert that can accommodate more than 5,000 fans and that every single one of them would not have to pay even a single sen to join me in enjoying music and sharing the joys of music-making.”

Rynn 1st Concert in Malaysia will be held at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre’s Plenary Hall on Dec 8 at 7.30pm.

Tickets are priced at RM80, RM120, RM150, RM180 and RM250 and will be available at Berjaya Time Square (centre court), KL. For details, call the concert hotline, 1-300-88-2383.
